Maximum Snowfall Accumulation Expected to Reach 10 cm
Heavy snowfall is expected in most regions across the country tomorrow, raising concerns about hazardous conditions during the morning commute.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration on February 1, heavy snow is forecast to begin tonight, and a preliminary heavy snow advisory has been issued for most areas nationwide, including Seoul (from 9 p.m.).
Depending on the region, snowfall rates are expected to reach 1 to 3 centimeters per hour, with some areas seeing around 5 centimeters per hour. As a result, heavy snow warnings may be issued in certain locations.
In the metropolitan area and Gangwon Province, snowfall rates of 1 to 3 centimeters per hour, and in some places over 5 centimeters per hour, are expected from late tonight through early Monday morning. In the Chungcheong region, snow will fall at a rate of 1 to 3 centimeters per hour from early Monday morning, while in the Jeolla region and western Gyeongsang region, similar rates are expected from Monday morning through the late morning.
Expected snowfall accumulations are as follows: 3 to 10 centimeters in the metropolitan area; 5 to 10 centimeters in inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon Province (over 15 centimeters in mountainous regions); 3 to 8 centimeters in the Chungcheong region; 2 to 7 centimeters in North Jeolla Province; 1 to 5 centimeters in South Jeolla Province; 5 to 10 centimeters in Ulleungdo and Dokdo; 2 to 7 centimeters in western Gyeongsang region; 1 to 5 centimeters in central inland North Gyeongsang Province; 1 to 3 centimeters in Daegu, southeastern inland North Gyeongsang, eastern coast of North Gyeongsang, and central inland South Gyeongsang; and 1 to 5 centimeters in Jeju Island.
Nationwide, the morning low temperatures are forecast to range from minus 10 degrees Celsius to 0 degrees, with daytime highs between minus 1 degree and 7 degrees Celsius. As subzero temperatures are expected from the morning, extra caution is advised for icy and slippery roads. In particular, commuters should be well-prepared for the morning journey.
Snow is expected to stop in the metropolitan area and Chungnam region by the early hours of the 2nd, and in most other areas nationwide by late morning. In Jeju Island, snow is expected to continue until the afternoon before tapering off.
On the 5th, citizens cautiously walk along a side street in Jung-gu, Seoul, where snow removal work was insufficient, as roads throughout downtown Seoul froze overnight due to subzero temperatures following heavy snowfall in the metropolitan area the previous day. 2025.12.05 Photo by Dongju Yoon
