Yongin Eastern Police Station Arrests Director's Husband
Small Camera Installed in Staff Women's Restroom Toilet
An arrest warrant has been requested for a man in his 40s who installed an illegal camera in the women's restroom for staff at a daycare center where his wife serves as director.
The Yongin Eastern Police Station in Gyeonggi Province announced on January 31 that it had applied for a pretrial detention warrant for Mr. A (in his 40s), who is under suspicion of violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes (illegal filming using cameras, etc.).
Mr. A is accused of installing a small camera in the staff women's restroom toilet at a daycare center in Yongin City in early December of last year and conducting illegal filming. The daycare center is operated by Mr. A's wife, and Mr. A reportedly worked there as a school bus driver.
Mr. A's crime was uncovered on December 9, when a teacher discovered the small camera while using the restroom. At the time, the director was absent, so the teacher informed Mr. A, the director's husband, of the discovery. Mr. A then said he would check the SD card, brought a card reader, and falsely claimed that there was no data on it.
Attempted Memory Deletion After Forensic Request to Private Firm
According to teachers at the daycare center, even after this incident, Mr. A and his wife ignored the teachers' requests and did not immediately report the discovery of the camera to the police. Instead, they only requested a forensic analysis of the small camera from a private company. It is also reported that there were indications of attempts to delete some of the memory during this process. Police believe that at least five teachers used the restroom where the illegal camera was installed, and stated that the number of victims could increase as the investigation proceeds.
After receiving a report in mid-December, the police launched an investigation, seized Mr. A's computer and other evidence, and are conducting forensic analysis to confirm the facts. Mr. A has partially admitted to the allegations during police questioning. However, when police conducted a search and seizure on December 23, Mr. A claimed that he had already disposed of the camera and mobile phone in question, so the police are working to secure additional evidence. A police official stated, "Based on the victims' statements, we believe the crime occurred before December," adding, "As this is an ongoing investigation, it is difficult to provide further details."
The pretrial detention hearing for Mr. A is scheduled to take place at Suwon District Court on February 2.
