Russia has agreed to partially accept U.S. President Donald Trump's request and will suspend its attacks on Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, until February 1. In response, Ukraine has stated that it will take corresponding measures if Russia halts its attacks on energy facilities.
According to Yonhap News and foreign media outlets, Dmitry Peskov, spokesperson for the Kremlin, told reporters on the 30th (local time) that Russia has agreed to President Trump's "personal request" to temporarily suspend attacks on major Ukrainian cities. He announced that attacks on Kyiv would be suspended until February 1.
Previously, President Trump claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed to suspend attacks on Kyiv and other major Ukrainian cities for one week. He explained that President Putin accepted his request to refrain from shelling, considering the harsh winter conditions Ukraine is facing.
However, spokesperson Peskov did not specify when the conversation between the two leaders took place, whether the agreement applies to cities other than Kyiv, or whether the suspension of airstrikes is limited to energy facilities.
Following the Kremlin's announcement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine would also respond if Russia halts its attacks.
President Zelensky explained that the suspension of attacks was initiated based on a U.S. proposal, and that there had been no direct dialogue or official agreement between Ukraine and Russia regarding this matter. He said, "This can be seen more as an opportunity than an agreement." In his speech that day, he also emphasized, "If Russia does not attack our energy infrastructure-such as power plants or other energy assets-we will not attack their facilities either."
No airstrikes occurred in Kyiv in the early hours of the previous day. President Zelensky also stated that while energy facilities in Ukraine were attacked on the afternoon of the 29th, there was no related damage in the early hours of the 30th.
