KOSPI Closes at 5,224.36, Sets Another All-Time High

KOSDAQ Closes Down 1% from Previous Session

The KOSPI set another all-time high, but ended the session having given up most of its gains as investors took profits.


On January 30, the KOSPI closed at 5,224.36, up 3.11 points (0.06%) from the previous day. This marks the highest closing level in KOSPI history. Trading volume was provisionally tallied at 852.083 million shares, with a trading value of 34.701662 trillion won.


During the session, the KOSPI climbed as high as 5,321.68, surpassing the 5,300 mark for the first time ever. By investor type, institutions and foreigners recorded net sales of 645.789 billion won and 2.194816 trillion won, respectively, while individuals were net buyers of 2.769455 trillion won. In the futures market, foreigners and individuals posted net sales of 188.195 billion won and 255.721 billion won, respectively, while institutions were net buyers of 380.429 billion won.


By sector, most industries declined. Electricity & Gas fell by 3.87%, Construction by 3.8%, and Metals by 3.62%. On the other hand, the securities sector rose by 2.81% on increased trading value driven by the market rally, while Textiles & Apparel rose 2.35%, Telecommunications 2.17%, Food & Beverages and Tobacco 1.36%, Electrical & Electronics 1.52%, Distribution 0.78%, and Finance 0.43%.

Among large-cap stocks, most companies declined except for Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, SK Square, and Hanwha Aerospace. Hyundai Motor fell by 5.1%, Doosan Enerbility by 3.3%, and NAVER by 4.1%. In contrast, Samsung Electronics rose 0.3%, SK Hynix 5.4%, and Hanwha Aerospace 0.2%.


The KOSDAQ index ended lower. On this day, the KOSDAQ closed at 1,149.44, down 14.97 points (1.29%) from the previous day. By investor type, foreigners and individuals posted net sales of 316.5 billion won and 786.854 billion won, respectively, while institutions were net buyers of 1.304071 trillion won.


Most of the top market cap stocks declined. ABL Bio fell by 19.1%, HLB by 14.4%, Peptron by 7.6%, and PharmaResearch by 11.2%. Conversely, Leeno Industrial rose by 15%, Caregen by 4.7%, Wonik IPS by 3%, and EO Technics by 4.3%.


Meanwhile, in the Seoul foreign exchange market, the won-dollar exchange rate closed at 1,422.5 won, down 23.7 won from the previous day.
