The police task force (TF) investigating the 2024 attack on President Lee Jaemyung-an incident now designated as a terrorist act-will officially begin its operations.
The National Office of Investigation announced on the 25th that the TF, consisting of 45 members and two investigative teams, will be fully operational starting from the 26th. The TF will be led by Jeong Kyungho, Chief of the Investigation Division at the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency (Senior Superintendent), and its office will be established at the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency.
Previously, in January 2024, President Lee, who was then the leader of the Democratic Party, was stabbed in the neck by a man surnamed Kim (aged 67) wielding a weapon while visiting Gadeokdo in Busan. The Busan Metropolitan Police Agency, which investigated the incident at the time, concluded that Kim acted alone without any accomplices or masterminds.
However, members of the current ruling bloc have since raised suspicions that, during the administration of President Yoon Sukyeol, the National Intelligence Service and the Counter-Terrorism Center failed to designate the incident as a terrorist act and destroyed evidence at the scene, thereby minimizing and distorting the case. Subsequently, on the 20th, the government officially designated the incident as a terrorist act.
