Police Acknowledge Physical Contact
but Find No Evidence of Intent for Sexual Misconduct
The police have cleared Jung Cheolmin, the well-known producer of the variety show 'Six Senses,' of charges of indecent assault.
The Mapo Police Station in Seoul determined that there was no evidence to support the indecent assault allegation against Jung and decided not to refer the case for prosecution on December 31 of last year. The police acknowledged that there had been physical contact between Jung and producer A, who filed the complaint, but concluded that there was insufficient evidence to prove intent of sexual misconduct.
Producer A filed a complaint on August 15 of last year, alleging that Jung had made unwanted physical contact while they were moving locations after a company dinner in Sangam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul, in the early morning hours. In contrast, Jung’s legal representative denied the allegation, stating that the only contact involved patting or putting an arm around A’s shoulder as a gesture of encouragement.
The police reviewed CCTV footage from the scene but concluded that it was difficult to classify the incident as indecent assault. In response, on January 15, A submitted an objection to the police decision. A’s side argued that the decision failed to take into account the difficulty of expressing discomfort to Jung, who was A’s superior with personnel authority.
Attorney Lee Eunui, legal representative for A, stated, "It is hard to understand the police’s conclusion that there was no intent of sexual misconduct, even though they acknowledged that Jung massaged A’s forearm and nape and pressed foreheads together."
CJ ENM’s internal investigation partially acknowledged Jung’s sexual misconduct but found no evidence of workplace harassment. Both parties are currently appealing the results of the internal investigation.
