Smoke Detected Under Train at Jongno 3-ga Station on Subway Line 1...Passengers Evacuated

Smoke was detected on a subway train at Jongno 3-ga Station on Seoul Subway Line 1 at around 2:38 p.m. on January 23, 2026, prompting all passengers to disembark and evacuate.

According to fire authorities, the smoke is believed to have been caused by overheated brakes. The smoke was found to be coming from the underside of a northbound train heading from Sinchang to Cheongnyangni on Line 1.

A fire department official stated, "This was not a fire, and there were no casualties."

The police and fire department restricted access to the platforms and evacuated subway users to the outside. It has been reported that northbound trains are currently passing through the station without stopping.

The Seoul Metro Corporation sent the affected train back to the depot and allowed northbound trains to pass through Jongno 3-ga Station without stopping until approximately 3:16 p.m.

A representative from the corporation stated, "The train has been transferred to Hoegi Station above ground for investigation into the cause. Inspections of the platform and tracks revealed no issues, and smoke ventilation inside the platform has been completed, so trains are now operating normally."
