While former President Yoon Suk-yeol is facing the death penalty sought by the special prosecutor on charges of leading an insurrection, it has come to light that a fifth-grade elementary school student sent a letter to former President Yoon, expressing "genuine support."
On January 20, Bae Ui-cheol, the legal representative for former President Yoon, stated on his Facebook page, "I delivered a letter written by a child so that the President could read it during a recess in the trial."
In the letter, the student introduced themselves as a fifth grader and wrote, "Just as Venezuela's Maduro was captured by the United States and a president from the free world took power, I believe President Yoon Suk-yeol will also return to the presidency. Although South Korea is currently in crisis, just as we once repelled invasions from the Qing Dynasty and North Korea, awakened citizens and the United States will reveal the truth about the fraudulent election."
The student continued, "I will let the world know the true nature of the Lee Jaemyung administration and protect our country. President Yoon Suk-yeol, you who have devoted yourself to the nation, are truly a patriotic hero of Korea. We are always supporting you," the letter added.
At the bottom of the letter, the phrases "Yoon Again," "Eradicate Communism," and "Root Out in One Stroke" were written, and the letter was signed, "From a Patriotic Child."
In response, Bae Ui-cheol conveyed that former President Yoon expressed his sincere gratitude, saying, "Children are the future of Korea. Please devote yourselves to your studies so you can lead this country well in the future."
Meanwhile, on January 13, the special prosecutor for the insurrection case requested the death penalty for former President Yoon at the sentencing hearing held by the 25th Criminal Division (Presiding Judge Ji Guyoun) of the Seoul Central District Court.
Additionally, on January 16, the 35th Criminal Division (Presiding Judge Baek Daehyun) of the Seoul Central District Court, which is handling the case related to former President Yoon's "obstruction of arrest," sentenced him to five years in prison. This was the first ruling on former President Yoon, who was indicted on nine charges related to the 12·3 Martial Law.
The first verdict in former President Yoon's insurrection case is expected to be delivered next month.
