Damyang County in Jeonnam will operate the "Dementia Safety Taxi" service to assist elderly residents who have difficulty accessing the Dementia Safety Center due to transportation issues.
According to Damyang County on January 23, the county signed a "Dementia Safety Taxi Service Agreement" on January 21 with local taxi companies Changpyeong Taxi Co., Ltd. and Seongyeong Taxi Co., Ltd.
This agreement was established to improve mobility for elderly residents who either live in transportation-vulnerable areas with limited access to public transit or have difficulty moving and therefore hesitate to visit the Dementia Safety Center.
Under the agreement, the two taxi companies will provide a pick-up and drop-off service, safely transporting eligible users of the Dementia Safety Center programs from their homes to the center and back.
Additionally, taxi drivers will complete training to better accommodate dementia patients and their caregivers, and will actively cooperate in creating a dementia-friendly transportation environment.
The county expects that this initiative will significantly improve access to dementia management services, such as early screening and program participation, by reducing both transportation costs and psychological burdens for the elderly.
A Damyang County official stated, "Through the operation of the Dementia Safety Taxi, we aim to reduce service blind spots and ensure that elderly residents can receive professional care and counseling in a more comfortable environment. We will continue to build a safe environment for dementia patients through ongoing public-private cooperation."
