Teachers from across the country are gathering in Asan to revive Admiral Yi Sun-sin's leadership and spirit of patriotism in the classroom. They are participating in an "advanced training" program that goes beyond simply reading biographies of great figures, delving into the admiral's intense life and historical records from multiple perspectives.
The Hyeonchungsa Shrine Management Office of the National Heritage Administration announced on January 23 that, in cooperation with the Chungmu Education Center of the Chungcheongnam-do Office of Education and other organizations, it will hold the "2026 Hyeonchungsa Teacher Training Program" in Asan, Chungcheongnam-do, for four days starting from January 26. Since its launch in 2012, the program has produced 755 graduates over 14 years, establishing itself as a reputable venue for history education.
This year, thirty-four elementary, middle, and high school teachers from across the country will participate. The lectures will cover lesser-known aspects of the admiral's service in Hamgyeong Province, the operational principles of the turtle ship, and the historical value of the national treasure "Nanjung Ilgi" in depth. The program will also explore the footsteps of Admiral Yi's descendants who participated in the anti-Japanese independence movement during the late Joseon Dynasty and the Japanese colonial period.
Outside the classroom, participants will experience history firsthand. They will visit historical sites in the Asan area, including Hyeonchungsa Shrine, the admiral's tomb, and Crab Rock, to verify records from historical documents on site.
An official from the Hyeonchungsa Shrine Management Office stated, "We hope that the teachers' deepened understanding of history will serve as a catalyst for providing students with a living history education."
