Kim Byungki's Wife Appears Before Police Over Alleged Nomination Fund Bribery

The spouse of independent lawmaker Kim Byungki, who is suspected of receiving nomination funds from district council members ahead of the 2020 general election, appeared before the police as a suspect on the 22nd.

Kim Byungki's Wife Appears Before Police Over Alleged Nomination Fund Bribery Yonhap News Agency

The Public Crime Investigation Division of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency summoned and is currently questioning Kim's spouse, identified as Lee, at the Mapo police office on charges including violations of the Political Funds Act. Entering the building at around 1:55 p.m., Lee did not respond to reporters’ questions such as "Do you admit to receiving nomination funds?" and "Was Assemblyman Kim aware of this?" and proceeded directly to the interrogation room.

The police plan to question Lee on whether nomination funds were solicited from former Dongjak District council members, and whether money was actually received and later returned.

Lee is accused of receiving 10 million won and 20 million won, respectively, from Seoul Dongjak District council members A and B just before the 21st general election in 2020, and then returning the money several months later. Council members A and B previously appeared before the police as suspects and testified, "All the statements in the petition are true." However, Kim’s side has denied the allegations, calling them malicious claims.

Lee is also suspected of having misused the corporate card of Cho, the vice chairperson of the Dongjak District Council, for personal purposes. The police conducted a preliminary investigation from April to August last year but closed the case, finding no charges.

After completing the investigation of Lee, the police are expected to coordinate the summoning of Assemblyman Kim as well.
