The KOSPI has surpassed the 5,000 mark. Leading stocks by market capitalization, such as those in the semiconductor and automotive sectors, are driving the index higher.

As of 9:08 a.m. on January 22, the KOSPI stood at 5,014.51, up 104.58 points (2.13%) from the previous trading day. The index opened at 4,987.06, up 77.13 points (1.57%) from the previous session, and has continued to widen its gains since then.


The rebound in the U.S. stock market has had an impact. On January 21 local time, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 49,077.23, up 588.64 points (1.21%) from the previous session. The S&P 500, which is focused on large-cap stocks, rose 78.76 points (1.16%) to close at 6,875.62, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq finished at 23,224.825, up 270.502 points (1.18%).


The easing of tensions between the United States and Europe is cited as a reason for the rebound. The United States has established a basic framework for future agreements with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) regarding the annexation of Greenland. In addition, the decision to withdraw plans for European tariffs has improved investor sentiment.


By investor type, foreign investors and institutions recorded net sales of 215 billion won and 230.1 billion won, respectively. In contrast, individual investors made net purchases of 445.1 billion won.


By sector, electrical and electronics as well as transportation and warehousing are both surging by more than 3%. Securities are up 2.08%, while chemicals and machinery & equipment are also rising by more than 1%. On the other hand, electric & gas is down 2.33%, and pharmaceuticals and metals are each declining by more than 1%.


Among the top stocks by market capitalization, Samsung Electronics was trading at 155,900 won, up 6,400 won (4.28%) from the previous session. Hyundai Motor is also jumping 4.92%, while SK Hynix and SK Square are both up more than 3%. In addition, LG Energy Solution and Doosan Enerbility are both rising by more than 2%. Conversely, Samsung Biologics and Hanwha Aerospace are both down more than 3%.


The KOSDAQ stood at 960.74, up 9.45 points (0.99%) from the previous session.


By investor type, individuals recorded net purchases of 210.1 billion won. In contrast, foreign investors and institutions posted net sales of 125.8 billion won and 77.7 billion won, respectively.


By sector, finance is up 3.37%, while electrical & electronics, machinery & equipment, and chemicals are all rising by more than 1%. On the other hand, transportation equipment & parts, telecommunications, construction, and entertainment & culture are posting slight declines.


Among the top stocks by market capitalization, Alteogen was trading at 376,500 won, up 3,000 won (0.80%) from the previous session. Ecopro BM and Ecopro are both up more than 5%, while Samchundang Pharm has jumped more than 3%. HLB and Kolon TissueGene are also rising by more than 2%. Conversely, Rainbow Robotics, LIG Nex1, and Caregen are posting slight declines.
