French Presidential Office Proposes NATO Military Exercises in Greenland

French Presidential Office Proposes NATO Military Exercises in Greenland

In response to U.S. President Donald Trump's threat to annex Greenland, France has called for NATO military exercises to be held in Greenland.

According to AFP and other sources on January 21 (local time), the ?lys?e Palace stated, "France is requesting NATO military exercises in Greenland and is ready to contribute to them."

An official from the ?lys?e Palace told the daily Le Parisien that the proposal is intended to send a signal to President Trump that Europe is taking Arctic security seriously.

Previously, President Trump argued that the United States should take control of Greenland because European countries were not active enough in defending the Arctic region against Russia or China. Some NATO member states in Europe, including France, have been participating in the joint military exercise "Operation Arctic Endurance," hosted by Denmark in Greenland since January 15, in an effort to reassure the United States. However, this exercise is not being conducted at the NATO level.
