On Thursday, the 22nd, the severe cold wave will continue.


On the morning of the 22nd, the lowest temperatures will drop to between -19 and -5 degrees Celsius, and the highest daytime temperatures will remain between -8 and 3 degrees Celsius.


By region, the morning temperature in inland Gyeonggi, inland Gangwon, mountainous areas of Gangwon, North Chungcheong, and inland North Gyeongsang is expected to be around -15 degrees Celsius. In the rest of the central region (excluding the east coast of Gangwon) and inland southern regions, temperatures are forecast to drop below -10 degrees Celsius. The east coast of Gangwon and the southern coastal regions are expected to see morning temperatures between -10 and -5 degrees Celsius.


The expected minimum and maximum temperatures are as follows: Seoul, -14 and -5 degrees; Incheon, -13 and -5 degrees; Daejeon, -12 and -2 degrees; Gwangju, -8 and 1 degree; Daegu, -11 and 0 degrees; Ulsan, -9 and 0 degrees; and Busan, -8 and 2 degrees Celsius.


The severe cold is expected to continue through the weekend. On Friday, the 23rd, the morning low will range from -19 to -2 degrees Celsius, with daytime highs between -4 and 7 degrees. On Saturday, the 24th, temperatures will range from -18 to -1 degrees in the morning and -6 to 7 degrees during the day. On Sunday, the 25th, the morning low will be between -18 and -2 degrees, and the daytime high between -5 and 7 degrees Celsius.


The cold wave is expected to gradually ease over the weekend as the pressure system bringing cold northerly winds to Korea changes. On Monday next week, the morning temperature will be between -11 and -2 degrees, and the daytime temperature will rise to between -1 and 8 degrees Celsius, which is similar to or slightly below the seasonal average.


On the 22nd, snow is expected in the Jeolla west coast, southern inland North Jeolla, Gwangju, central inland South Jeolla, southwestern coastal South Jeolla, and Jeju. Additionally, snow will fall in South Chungcheong and central and southern North Chungcheong until dawn, and in the west coast of South Chungcheong late at night.


Furthermore, Ulleungdo and Dokdo are expected to receive 5 to 20 centimeters of snow; mountainous areas of Jeju, 5 to 15 centimeters (with some places seeing more than 20 centimeters); mid-mountain areas of Jeju, 5 to 10 centimeters; the west coasts of North Jeolla and South Jeolla, 2 to 7 centimeters (with some places seeing more than 10 centimeters); Jeju coastal areas, 2 to 7 centimeters; Sejong, northern inland South Chungcheong, Gwangju, central inland South Jeolla, southwestern coastal South Jeolla, and southern inland North Jeolla, 1 to 5 centimeters; central and southern North Chungcheong, 1 to 3 centimeters; and the five West Sea islands, Daejeon, and South Chungcheong (excluding northern inland areas), around 1 centimeter.


At times, snow may fall at a rate of 1 to 3 centimeters per hour in the southern west coast of North Jeolla, the west coast of South Jeolla, central inland regions, Jeju, Ulleungdo, and Dokdo, so precautions are advised. In Ulleungdo, Dokdo, and the mid-mountain and mountainous areas of Jeju, heavy snow may fall at a rate of 5 centimeters per hour.


On the 22nd, strong winds with instantaneous speeds of around 55 kilometers per hour (up to 70 kilometers per hour in the mountains of Gangwon) are expected, especially along the coasts and mountainous areas of Gangwon. In areas under strong wind advisories, such as the west coast of South Chungcheong, the west coast of Jeolla, Jeju (excluding the southern coast), and Yeosu in South Jeolla, instantaneous wind speeds may exceed 70 kilometers per hour (up to 90 kilometers per hour in mountainous areas).
