On January 21, the Democratic Party of Korea characterized President Lee Jaemyung’s New Year’s press conference as “a bold declaration to make this moment in Korea’s history the starting point for a great leap forward.”
Park Suhyeon, the party’s chief spokesperson, stated during a briefing that “President Lee presented a vision for Korea to become a ‘leading nation’ that demonstrates to the world a virtuous cycle of democratic restoration and growth amid a rapidly changing global order.” He explained that “the ‘five major transformations’-regional-led growth, inclusive growth that shares opportunities and rewards, sustainable growth based on safety, attractive growth driven by culture, and stable growth underpinned by peace-represent a new path for Korea to lead the world’s future.”
Chief Spokesperson Park added, “By clearly establishing the principle of ‘putting the people’s lives first’ in state affairs, and expressing a vision and determination to open the path for Korea’s great leap forward through pragmatism that transcends ideology, factionalism, and political strife, we could clearly sense his resolve.” He continued, “The Democratic Party will fully support the great transformation that the Lee Jaemyung administration will lead for Korea, with a heavy sense of responsibility, so that the changes can be truly felt in the daily lives of the people.”
Jeong Cheongrae, the Democratic Party leader, also issued a separate statement regarding the press conference, saying, “It was a press conference that fulfilled the public’s right to know by allowing people to hear directly from the President on all areas of state affairs, without the assistance of aides.” He added, “The Democratic Party will do its utmost to help the President realize the national vision, love for the people, and sense of responsibility as President that he demonstrated during the press conference.”
