People Power Party: "President Lee's New Year Press Conference Was Nothing More Than Electioneering and Self-Justification"

The People Power Party harshly criticized President Lee Jaemyung's New Year press conference on January 21, stating that it "only revealed incompetence and irresponsibility."

Park Sunghoon, Chief Spokesperson for the People Power Party, commented on President Lee's press conference, saying, "President Lee declared 'Now is Korea's time' and called for 'region-led growth' and 'growth for all' during his New Year press conference, but in reality, the content was nothing more than electioneering and self-justification."

Regarding the special investigation into the Unification Church, Chief Spokesperson Park pointed out, "The opposition leader is risking his life with a hunger strike, calling for a special investigation into the Democratic Party's successive nomination bribery scandals and allegations of receiving funds from the Unification Church. Meanwhile, President Lee has consistently spread blatant falsehoods, almost as if mocking these efforts." Previously, President Lee remarked regarding the Unification Church special investigation, "I can't help but think that the goal was to prevent an actual investigation from taking place."

Chief Spokesperson Park refuted the president's remarks on each issue raised during the press conference.

Concerning the confirmation hearing for Lee Hyehoon, the nominee for Minister of Planning and Budget, Park criticized, "The nominee has been consistently uncooperative in submitting the basic materials necessary for verification. How are we supposed to conduct a proper vetting process? Proposing to hold a hearing without any supporting documentation is nothing more than a ploy to broadcast the nominee's one-sided explanations, and it is no different from using the hearing as a means of granting a free pass and reducing the opposition to a rubber stamp."

On real estate issues, in response to the president's openness to possible tax reforms, Park stated, "There are no visible plans to increase supply, and only the prospect of tax hikes has been announced, suggesting an intention to suppress housing prices through taxation." Regarding the exchange rate, Park added, "The comment, 'If there were measures, we would have already taken them,' is essentially an admission of having no solutions. Is the government, which previously summoned and pressured companies to release their dollars, now simply giving up?"

Chief Spokesperson Park concluded, "Although President Lee claims to lead a 'government of popular sovereignty,' in reality, the 'people' he refers to are limited to his most ardent supporters, the so-called 'Gaeddal.' There is no national unity in sight; all that is visible is a focus on extending power and self-protection."
