What Is This Seongdong District Facility That Draws One Million Visitors Every Year?

94% Satisfaction Rate... Winner of a World-Class Design Award

At a facility in Seongdong District, Seoul (headed by District Mayor Jeong Wono), more than one million people visit every winter season.

The number of users during the winter months (January, February, and December) increased from 470,000 in 2022 to 680,000 in 2023, and then reached 1.04 million in 2024, marking the first time the number surpassed one million. Last year, the facility attracted 1.1 million visitors. This figure is more than double compared to the early days of its introduction.

The "Seongdong-type Smart Shelter" has consistently surpassed 1 million users during the winter season, establishing itself as an essential cold wave mitigation facility. Provided by Seongdong District.

Resident satisfaction has also been high. In a survey conducted by the district last year with about 600 users, approximately 94% of respondents said they were satisfied with the operation.

This place, where people can escape the cold and rest warmly, is the "Seongdong-type Smart Shelter." Currently, a total of 56 shelters are in operation, installed in areas closely connected to residents' daily routines, such as on their way to work or school.

It is more than just a simple shelter. Equipped with advanced features such as an intelligent heating system, a bus information system, an air purification system, and an Internet of Things (IoT) control system, it provides a comfortable and safe environment.

In terms of design, the use of full glass panels enhances the sense of openness, while wooden materials add a sense of psychological comfort. Last year, it won the highest honor, Platinum, at the internationally renowned A' Design Award.

Jeong Wono, Mayor of Seongdong District, stated, "The Seongdong-type Smart Shelter has become more than just a place to warm up; it serves as a 'warm safety net' protecting residents from cold waves and has established itself as an essential facility in daily life. We will continue to pay close attention so that all residents can enjoy a safe daily life even during the harsh winter, and we will strive to consistently provide smart administrative services that bring positive changes to people's lives."
