Recommendation to Stockpile Five Days' Worth of Food at Home
Denmark: "If the U.S. Starts a Trade War, We Will Inevitably Respond"
As U.S. President Donald Trump continued to make strong statements regarding the annexation of Greenland, the Greenlandic government announced that it is considering all scenarios, including possible U.S. military intervention.
According to Bloomberg and other sources on January 20 (local time), Jens Frederik Nielsen, Prime Minister of Greenland, held a press conference in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, and stated that while he does not believe the United States will actually annex Greenland by force, the government is preparing for all possible scenarios. He added that the government plans to establish a dedicated task force composed of representatives from all regional authorities to provide assistance if citizens' daily lives are disrupted. It was also reported that the Greenlandic government is preparing to distribute new guidelines to residents, including recommendations to stockpile five days' worth of food at home.
At the same press conference, Mute B. Egede, Greenland's Minister of Finance, stated, "Greenland is under significant pressure," and emphasized, "We must prepare for all scenarios."
On the same day, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen attended a parliamentary Q&A session in Copenhagen and warned that if President Trump imposes additional tariffs on Denmark and other European countries, Europe would have no choice but to retaliate, which would have "serious consequences" for both Europe and the United States. She added, "I hope it does not come to that point, and I hope we can convince Americans that this is not the path we should take."
Recently, President Trump expressed solidarity with Greenland and pressured eight European countries-including Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and Norway-which have dispatched troops to the region, by announcing that, starting from February 1, a 10% additional tariff will be imposed on all goods from these nations. He also posted an image on social media depicting himself standing in a region marked as Greenland, holding the American flag.
