The Smart City Certification is a system that evaluates the smart city policies and project outcomes of local governments using both quantitative and qualitative indicators, and grants certification to cities that meet certain standards. To be certified, a city must score at least 1,400 points out of a possible 2,000, with 1,000 points each for quantitative and qualitative assessments.
Seongnam City received high marks across the board, including in public smart city capabilities, implementation systems, and smart service technology and infrastructure. In particular, the city was recognized for its excellence in policy outcomes that simultaneously address the climate crisis and foster the future mobility industry.
The city has proactively responded to climate challenges such as heatwaves and cold snaps by operating smart green and safety shelters equipped with smart technologies, including heating and cooling systems, air quality management, closed-circuit (CC) TV, and emergency bells. It has also strengthened the protection of transportation-vulnerable groups and enhanced urban safety. In addition, Seongnam is carrying out the “Mobility Specialized City Development Project,” which integrates autonomous shuttles, eco-friendly transportation, and vehicle sharing, thereby improving citizens’ mobility convenience and transportation efficiency.
Furthermore, Seongnam has been selected as a drone demonstration city for five consecutive years, continuously proving the practical application and effectiveness of smart city technologies through various pilot projects such as road safety management using artificial intelligence (AI) drones, closed-circuit (CC) TV analysis based on three-dimensional (3D) models, and drone delivery services.

Mayor Shin Sangjin stated, “This recertification is a result of Seongnam’s smart city policies being recognized externally. After obtaining the international certification from the British Standards Institution in 2022, we have now achieved certification for the second consecutive time, solidifying our status as a smart city of international standards. Based on the 2030 Seongnam Smart City Plan, we will further advance our smart city services and promote the spread of sustainable models.”
