Over 16 Million Daily Users in About 40 Days
Compensation Plan Worth 1.6 Trillion Won Distributed
Following a large-scale personal information leak, Coupang provided compensation in the form of a 50,000 won coupon, and analysis now shows that the number of users is recovering.
According to data compiled by the application analysis service Mobile Index on January 19, Coupang's daily active users (DAU) reached 16,385,758 on January 16. This count was recorded one day after Coupang began offering the 50,000 won purchase voucher as compensation. Coupang's DAU returned to the 16 million range for the first time in about 40 days since December 8, 2023.
Previously, Coupang's DAU peaked at 17,988,845 on December 1, 2023, but began to decline following the personal information leak. As the so-called "Talpang" (mass withdrawal from Coupang) trend continued, DAU fell to 14,589,004 by the end of the year.
However, on January 15, the day the 50,000 won purchase voucher was distributed, DAU recovered to 15,990,000, and surpassed the 16 million mark the following day.
Coupang is sequentially distributing purchase vouchers to members affected by the personal information leak. The vouchers consist of four types: a 5,000 won discount for all Coupang products, a 5,000 won discount for the Coupang Eats delivery platform, a 20,000 won discount for the Coupang Travel platform, and a 20,000 won discount for the luxury beauty and fashion platform Alux. The total value of this compensation plan amounts to 1.685 trillion won.
Harald Rogers, Interim CEO of Coupang, stated in a press release on December 29, "All Coupang employees deeply reflect on how much concern and distress this personal information leak has caused our customers," adding, "We will use this incident as an opportunity to put customer-centric values into practice, fulfill our responsibilities to the end, and become a company trusted by our customers."
