Hwaseong City Appoints North Korean Defector Chef Lee Sunsil as Promotional Ambassador

Hwaseong City in Gyeonggi Province announced on January 19 that it has appointed Lee Sunsil, a chef who defected from North Korea, as its new promotional ambassador.

At the appointment ceremony held in the main conference room of City Hall on the same day, Jung Myunggeun, Mayor of Hwaseong, presented Lee with a certificate of appointment as ambassador and requested her to communicate with citizens and widely promote the city’s appeal.


The city explained that Lee was appointed as an ambassador in recognition of her stable integration into society as a North Korean defector, as well as her professionalism and diligence developed as a culinary researcher.


Lee is a North Korean cuisine researcher who has built a food business with annual sales in the tens of billions of won. In addition to appearing on television, she operates a North Korean restaurant in Cheonggye-dong, Hwaseong City, where she engages closely with the public and local citizens.


With this appointment, Lee will participate in promoting city policies and major events for the next two years as part of her ambassador activities.


Mayor Jung stated, “It is meaningful to have Ms. Lee, who has delivered a message of hope through her challenges and efforts, serve as our ambassador. I expect that, based on her life experience and sincerity, she will build rapport with citizens and help widely promote Hwaseong City’s warm and positive image.”
