Kickoff Briefing Held for Public Events and Torch Relay
Plans for a Citizen-Participation Sports Festival
Andong City has officially begun preparations to successfully host the 64th Gyeongbuk Provincial Sports Festival, which will be co-hosted for the first time in North Gyeongsang Province. The city aims to elevate the quality and completeness of the event by transforming it from a simple sports competition into a "Cultural Sports Festival" that incorporates citizen participation and cultural content.
Kwon Ki-chang, Mayor of Andong City, is speaking at the kickoff briefing for the 64th Gyeongbuk Provincial Sports Festival held on the 16th at the City Hall Cheongbaek Room.
On January 19, Andong City announced that it had held a "Kickoff Briefing for the 64th Gyeongbuk Provincial Sports Festival Public Events and Torch Relay Service" at the Cheongbaek Room in City Hall.
The briefing was attended by Kwon Ki-chang, Mayor of Andong City, city officials, representatives from North Gyeongsang Province and Yecheon County, as well as officials from provincial, city, and county sports associations. The participants shared the direction and detailed operational plans for the event.
The meeting focused on the main production direction and program composition of the public events, including the opening ceremony, as well as the operation flow and on-site safety management system. In particular, the participants reviewed ways to expand attractions and experiential content that citizens can directly participate in and enjoy, emphasizing the festival aspect of the sports event.
Kwon Ki-chang, Mayor of Andong City, stated, "We are preparing this Provincial Sports Festival in a new form as a Cultural Sports Festival, different from the traditional approach," adding, "We will make thorough preparations to ensure that both athletes and citizens are fully satisfied, making this the best possible event."
The 64th Gyeongbuk Provincial Sports Festival will be held over four days, from April 3 to April 6, 2026. The event will begin with the opening ceremony at the Saemaeul Square of the North Gyeongsang Provincial Government Complex, followed by competitions in each discipline at their respective venues.
In addition, the 28th Gyeongsangbuk-do Sports Festival for the Disabled will take place over two days, from April 29 to April 30, 2026. Andong City plans to strengthen its operational capabilities by linking the two events and aims to enhance the completeness of the festival as a "Sports Festival for All Residents," ensuring both safety and convenience.
