License Revoked Level of Intoxication
Suspended from Duty
An active-duty police officer affiliated with the Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency was caught after causing an accident while driving under the influence, thanks to a report from a closed-circuit television (CCTV) control center.
On January 19, the Muan Police Station in Jeonnam announced that it had booked, without detention, a police lieutenant in his 50s from the Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency on suspicion of violating the Road Traffic Act (drunk driving), and is currently investigating the case.
The lieutenant is accused of driving while intoxicated at approximately 12:15 a.m. on January 16 on a road in Samhyang-eup, Muan County, Jeonnam, crashing into a roadside curb, and mounting the sidewalk in a single-vehicle accident.
The incident was uncovered due to the sharp observation of a CCTV control center operator monitoring the late-night road conditions. Upon witnessing the accident, the control center immediately reported it to the police, who then apprehended the lieutenant at the scene.
A breathalyzer test revealed that the lieutenant's blood alcohol concentration was at a level warranting license revocation, indicating a state of severe intoxication.
The police have suspended the lieutenant from duty and plan to initiate disciplinary procedures as soon as the investigation into the exact circumstances of the incident is completed.
