Musk: "Dojo3 Development Resumes... Chip to Set Global Production Record"

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, announced that the company will resume work on the Dojo3 project after making progress in the design of the AI5 chip.

On January 18 (local time), CEO Musk stated on his social networking service X (formerly Twitter), "Now that the AI5 chip design has reached a stable phase, Tesla will restart development work on Dojo3."

He continued, "If you are interested in developing chips that will set a new global production record, please send me a summary of the three most challenging technical problems you have solved so far," thus issuing a call to talented individuals worldwide.

On January 17, CEO Musk also said on X, "The AI5 chip design is nearly complete, and AI6 has entered its initial phase. In the future, we also plan to develop AI7, AI8, and AI9, aiming for a nine-month design cycle."

Dojo is a supercomputer built by Tesla based on its self-designed D-series chips. It is used to train machine learning models for Autopilot, Full Self-Driving (FSD), and the humanoid robot 'Optimus.' At one point, it was a core project in which Tesla invested billions of dollars to gain an edge in the artificial intelligence (AI) race. However, in August last year, Tesla abruptly halted the Dojo supercomputer project. The company had planned to create Dojo2 based on the second-generation D2 chip, but instead decided to focus on AI5 and AI6 chips.

At the time, CEO Musk confirmed the disbandment of the Dojo team, stating, "The moment it became clear that all paths converged on AI6, we ended Dojo and had to make some tough personnel decisions." Regarding Dojo3, he said, "It will likely survive in the form of a single board equipped with multiple AI6 system-on-chips (SoCs)."
