Homestay, Regular School Curriculum, and Field Experiences
"It's even wider than Nari Basin" - Ulleung Middle School students stand in the Tucson desert.
Ulleung County in North Gyeongsang Province is operating the TKAP (Tucson-Korea Ambassador Program), an overseas language study program in the United States, from January 16 to February 10 (27 nights and 28 days), with the goal of expanding international experience and fostering global talent.
This program includes 20 second-year students from Ulleung Middle School and takes place in Tucson, Arizona, United States. The students participate directly in the regular curriculum of local public schools, interacting with American students and developing practical English communication skills.
In particular, the homestay program with local families who have children of similar age is designed to allow students to experience daily life and culture, while naturally cultivating an international perspective and cooperation skills. Through this, the program aims to help students go beyond simple language study and develop the qualities of global citizens.
In addition to classroom learning, the program offers weekly field trips to major historical, natural, and cultural sites in the Tucson area, providing students with direct opportunities to experience American society and culture.
Prior to departure, a pre-orientation was held in Seoul on January 15, allowing students to familiarize themselves in advance with local culture, basic knowledge, everyday English, and entry procedures, thereby helping them adapt more smoothly to life in the United States.
Ulleung County's overseas language study program in the United States has been continuously operated since it was first launched in 2008.
County Governor Nam Hankwon stated, "I expect this program will bring about positive changes not only in the personal growth of students but also in the local community," adding, "I hope that students who gain international experience will one day lead the development of Ulleungdo and lay the foundation for the island to engage with the world. This will serve as a meaningful example of new possibilities for education in island regions."
After the program concludes, a follow-up initiative will invite the local American students who were matched one-on-one with Korean students during the program to Korea, where they will be introduced to the culture of Ulleungdo and the traditions of Korea.
Through this, the plan is to further deepen friendship and cultural understanding between students of both countries, and to establish a foundation for educational exchange that connects Ulleungdo with the world.
