Gangwon Province's First Indoor Recycling Hub Begins Full Operation
Citizen-Driven Resource Circulation System Launched
Pilot Program Completed, Gradual Expansion Planned
The Sinbuk Recycling Assistance Center, an indoor-based recycling drop-off facility introduced for the first time in Gangwon Province by Chuncheon City (Mayor Yuk Donghan), has completed its pilot operation and will officially begin full-scale operations on January 21.
Chuncheon City will hold an opening ceremony at 3 p.m. on January 21 at the Sinbuk Recycling Assistance Center in Sancheon-ri, Sinbuk-eup, to establish a citizen-centered resource circulation system. The event will be attended by Chuncheon Mayor Yuk Donghan, Chuncheon City Council Chair Kim Jinho, and other key guests, who will share their commitment to sustainable resource circulation policies.
The Sinbuk Recycling Assistance Center is a community-based facility designed to promote proper waste separation and recycling. It was established as an indoor alternative to traditional outdoor collection points in residential areas, in response to declining recycling rates and increasing household waste. Beyond serving as a simple drop-off site, the center is expected to become a hub for resource circulation promotion and education in the future. The facility underwent a pilot operation from December last year through January this year to review all aspects of its management before the official launch.
The center has a total floor area of 118.63 square meters and consists of four spaces: a room for food and household waste, a recycling drop-off room, a storage area, and one additional space. It will operate year-round from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Six dedicated managers will work in shifts to provide on-site supervision and management.
A Chuncheon City official stated, "The Sinbuk Recycling Assistance Center will serve as a resource circulation hub where citizens can directly participate and learn, thanks to its indoor drop-off system and on-site managers. Based on the results of this center's operation, we plan to gradually expand recycling assistance centers to major areas in the city, thereby building a more comprehensive resource circulation infrastructure."
