Police: "Kim Byungki Facing 13 Allegations Including Soongsil University and Investigation Interference... Analyzing Seized Materials"

Park Sungju, Commissioner of the National Office of Investigation at the National Police Agency, stated on January 19 that regarding various allegations of misconduct involving Kim Byungki, a lawmaker from the Democratic Party of Korea, "There have been 29 reports filed, and the allegations are classified into approximately 13 categories, including issues related to Soongsil University and alleged investigation interference." He added, "We have questioned 34 individuals, including suspects and witnesses."

At a regular press briefing that day, Commissioner Park said, "Kim's appearance for questioning will be possible once the analysis of confiscated materials reaches a certain stage."


Regarding the alleged nomination fund scandal, Commissioner Park stated, "We have questioned Kim Kyung, a member of the Seoul Metropolitan Council, three times so far," and added, "We will need to conduct further investigation before deciding whether to request an arrest warrant."


The Public Crime Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency conducted searches on January 14 at six locations, including Kim's residence in Daebang-dong, Dongjak-gu, Seoul, his local constituency office, his office at the National Assembly Members' Office Building, and the residence of Lee Jihee, vice chairperson of the Dongjak-gu Council, who is known to be a close associate of Kim. Investigators were also sent to the Daebang-dong apartment of Kim's second son.


In response to criticism over delays in investigations involving ruling party politicians, Commissioner Park replied, "We are conducting all necessary investigations in accordance with proper procedures."


Regarding various allegations against Lee Hyehoon, the nominee for Minister of Strategy and Finance, Commissioner Park said, "A total of seven reports have been filed, and the investigation is being focused at the Bangbae Police Station in Seoul."
