Kim: "Please Conclude My Expulsion with a Supreme Council Decision"
Kim Byungki, a lawmaker from the Democratic Party of Korea who has been embroiled in various allegations including involvement in nomination-related bribery and the misuse of his wife's business promotion expenses, announced on January 19, "Although I have not yet been notified of the Ethics Tribunal's decision, I will leave without requesting a retrial."
At a press conference held at the National Assembly's communication center that morning, Assemblyman Kim stated, "All of this began due to my own shortcomings. I deeply reflect on the disappointment I have caused to the public and the party," expressing his decision.
Previously, on January 12, the Democratic Party's Ethics Tribunal reviewed the various allegations surrounding Assemblyman Kim and decided on his expulsion. At that time, Kim had announced his intention to request a retrial.
However, concerns arose both inside and outside the party regarding Kim's decision. Given his status as a former floor leader, there was an opinion that it would be appropriate for him to take political responsibility. It was also assessed that the political pressure increased after Jang Donghyuk, leader of the People Power Party, began a hunger strike demanding a special investigation into the nomination bribery allegations.
Kim said, "If differences of opinion arise within the party and I become even a slight burden to my colleagues, I believe I must fully shoulder that responsibility myself."
He added, "If my expulsion is finalized without my request for a retrial, I ask that the matter be concluded by a decision of the Supreme Council. I do not wish to burden my senior, peer, or junior lawmakers by having the issue go through a general assembly."
However, he remained confident regarding the police investigation. Assemblyman Kim stated, "I ask that you observe calmly until the results of the police investigation are released. I have prepared evidence to prove that the allegations are not true. The substantive truth will surely come to light," he emphasized.
Kim drew a line at leaving the party voluntarily and indicated his intention to return to the Democratic Party after proving his innocence. He said, "I have consistently stated that even if I am expelled, I will not choose to leave the party on my own, and that position remains unchanged."
He also stressed, "I was part of the birth of the Lee Jaemyung administration. Wherever I am, I will do whatever I can for the success of the Lee Jaemyung administration. I will clear myself of all allegations. I will return, greet everyone again, and work for the public and the party with greater humility."
