This symposium has been organized to explore a sustainable future for regions transitioning from coal industries and to discuss policy directions for the cancer treatment industry based on heavy ion accelerators. Domestic and international experts, along with local citizens, will participate to share new possibilities in the medical industry and seek solutions for regional industrial transformation.
Notably, in December of last year, Samcheok City officials visited France and Belgium to directly inspect heavy ion therapy center construction sites and particle accelerator manufacturers, and to review strategies for establishing a medical industry cluster suitable for the Dogye area. Based on these preparations, the symposium is expected to serve as a practical platform for international cooperation and technological exchange.
On the first day of the event, keynote speeches by experts from France, Belgium, and Japan will be delivered, along with case presentations from Taiwan, Japan, and Korea, and a panel discussion. On the second day, presentations by experts from the United States and the sharing of medical industry cases within Korea are scheduled.
A Samcheok City official stated, "The medical industry based on heavy ion accelerators is emerging as a new growth engine for former mining regions. We hope that this symposium will serve as an opportunity to strengthen the foundation for international cooperation and jointly design the future of the regional industry."
