Attracting 920 Billion Won Through Focused Investment in Strategic Industries
1 Trillion Won Milestone Within Reach
Wonju City in Gangwon Province has attracted approximately 920 billion won in investments over the past four years since the establishment of its Investment Promotion Division, and is now aiming to achieve 1 trillion won in investment attraction this year. The city is being recognized for the visible results of its focused strategy centered on strategic industries.
Since investment attraction statistics began in 2010, it previously took seven years to reach the 1 trillion won milestone, but now the city is on the verge of achieving this goal in a much shorter period.
This is attributed to the expansion of Wonju’s key industries from its traditional focus on medical devices to include future-oriented strategic sectors such as bio and semiconductors, resulting in both the scope and scale of investments growing. The city’s strategy of selection and concentration on strategic industries is translating into tangible investment attraction.
Another notable feature is the significant increase in reinvestment by local companies. Companies already established in Wonju are deciding to make additional investments to expand production facilities, launch new businesses, and enhance research and development, thereby contributing to the overall increase in investment attraction. This demonstrates the trust companies have in Wonju’s industrial base and investment environment.
By industry, new investments and reinvestments are being made primarily in sectors that Wonju is actively fostering, such as semiconductor equipment and materials, secondary batteries, defense, bio, and food manufacturing. These investments are expected to not only advance the local industrial structure but also lead to stable job creation.
Wonju City has actively supported corporate investment decisions through strategies such as customized attraction based on business demand, phased expansion of industrial complexes, prompt licensing and administrative support, and ongoing communication with existing companies to resolve challenges. These policies are directly leading to investment execution, resulting in large-scale investment attraction in a short period.
Looking ahead, Wonju City plans to further strengthen its investment promotion activities focusing on new growth industries such as semiconductors, bio, and defense, and to concentrate its administrative capabilities on creating a favorable environment for corporate investment through the development of industrial complexes and tailored administrative support.
A Wonju City official stated, "The fact that we are now aiming for 1 trillion won in investment attraction just four years after the establishment of the Investment Promotion Division shows that our investment policies have moved beyond quantitative expansion to achieve qualitative results. We will continue to actively support the attraction of new companies as well as the growth and reinvestment of local businesses to inject real vitality into the regional economy."
