US Treasury Chief on Greenland Annexation Dispute: "Europe Will Realize the Importance of the US Security Umbrella"

Scott Bessent, US Secretary of the Treasury, commented on the conflict between the United States and Europe regarding the annexation of Greenland, stating, "European leaders will ultimately realize that they must remain under the American security umbrella," and added, "We will not entrust the security of the United States and the Western Hemisphere to other countries."

In an interview with NBC on the 18th (local time), Secretary Bessent said, "For decades, for over a century, US presidents have wanted to acquire Greenland," expressing this view.

Secretary Bessent said, "We are building the Golden Dome, the next-generation US missile defense system, and President Donald Trump is strategic. He is looking beyond this year, anticipating possible conflicts in the Arctic." He also stated, "If Russia or any other country attacks Greenland, we will be drawn into that war. Therefore, it is better to achieve peace through strength by making Greenland a part of the United States now. Europe shows weakness, but America demonstrates strength."

Secretary Bessent added, "The President believes that it is impossible to strengthen (Arctic) security without Greenland being incorporated into the United States," emphasizing that President Trump's determination to annex Greenland will not waver. He continued, "I believe Europeans will understand that this (incorporating Greenland into the United States) is the best for Greenland, Europe, and America."

Regarding the cracks emerging in the NATO alliance as President Trump raises pressure by announcing tariffs on eight European countries that are NATO members, Secretary Bessent said, "European leaders will ultimately turn around and realize that they must remain under the American security umbrella," and added, "If the United States withdraws its support, what will happen to Ukraine? Everything will collapse."

On the European Union's move to break the trade agreement with the United States, Secretary Bessent commented, "The trade agreement is not finalized, and emergency measures (tariffs) can be very different from other trade agreements."

Meanwhile, regarding the US Supreme Court's review of the legality of President Trump imposing reciprocal tariffs based on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), Secretary Bessent said, "I believe the Supreme Court is very unlikely to overturn the President's mature economic policies," adding, "They did not overturn Obamacare either. I believe the Supreme Court will not create chaos."
