Hyundai Avante Becomes First Korean Car to Surpass 4 Million Cumulative Sales in the U.S.

Hyundai Motor Company's compact sedan, the Avante (known locally as the Elantra), has surpassed cumulative sales of 4 million units in the United States, 24 years after its launch in the market.

According to Hyundai Motor Company on January 18, the Avante, which began sales in the United States in 1991, recorded a total of 4,010,661 units sold in the country as of December last year. The model surpassed 1 million cumulative sales in 2005, 14 years after its initial launch, and reached 2 million and 3 million units in 2013 and 2018, respectively. Over the past 24 years, annual sales have averaged more than 100,000 units.

Since 2022, the Avante has accounted for more than 50% of Hyundai Motor Company's annual sedan sales in the United States. Currently, one out of every two Hyundai sedans sold in the U.S. is an Avante.

The Avante's continued popularity in the United States is attributed to its "diverse lineup" and "high price competitiveness." The vehicle is available not only in a gasoline model but also as a hybrid and a high-performance N model.

The Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) in the United States is in the mid-$22,000 range, giving it a strong price advantage compared to competing models such as the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic.

The Avante was named North American Car of the Year (NACTOY) in both 2012 and 2021, and last year, it received the highest rating of TSP+ in the crash safety assessment announced by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

After first entering the U.S. market in 1986, Hyundai Motor Company is set to mark its 40th anniversary this year by launching a fully redesigned model of the Avante.
