Kim Woong Criticizes Leader Cho Kuk for Leading Investigative Power Reform, Citing Police's Inadequate Probe into Kim Kyung

Former People Power Party National Assembly member Kim Woong criticized the police's inadequate investigation into Seoul City Councilor Kim Kyung, who is suspected of receiving "nomination bribes," claiming it is a result of the adjustment of investigative powers between the prosecution and police led by the Democratic Party and Cho Kuk, leader of the Cho Kuk Innovation Party.

He also asserted that the Democratic Party's purpose in abolishing the prosecution and adjusting investigative powers was "to take money without being punished."

On the late afternoon of January 16, Kim Woong posted on his Facebook page, sharing a photo capturing two articles related to the investigation of Councilor Kim. One article reported that while the police conducted a search and seizure on Councilor Kim, who had just returned from the United States, they excluded his actual residence-an apartment in Seocho-dong-from the search. The other article stated that the police failed to secure the laptop that Councilor Kim had used for three years.

Kim Woong wrote, "At last, Kook's adjustment of investigative powers is showing its effect," and emphasized, "The Democratic Party's abolition of the prosecution and adjustment of investigative powers had only one purpose: so the Democratic Party could take money without being punished."

He continued, "This kind of investigation is not incompetence; it is simply a crime. It makes you an accomplice to the Democratic Party's corruption," adding, "I applaud Kook."

Cho Kuk served as Senior Presidential Secretary for Civil Affairs in the Moon Jae-in administration and played a leading role in the adjustment of investigative powers between the prosecution and police. In January 2020, immediately after the National Assembly passed the amendments to the Prosecutors' Office Act and the Criminal Procedure Act, which included the adjustment of investigative powers, he revealed on his Facebook page that he had participated in the task as a member of the advisory committee for the adjustment of investigative powers between the Supreme Prosecutors' Office and the National Police Agency during the Roh Moo-hyun administration, and that after the launch of the Moon Jae-in administration, as Senior Secretary for Civil Affairs, he assisted the Ministers of Justice and Interior and Safety in reaching an agreement.

Meanwhile, on the morning of January 16, Kim Woong also posted on his Facebook page, recalling an episode where Cho Kuk once called him and told him, "Do not oppose what the government is doing." Kim Woong criticized Cho Kuk, stating, "Anyway, every time you open your mouth, it's a lie. That's all you do."
