On January 16, Jeollanam-do signed a business agreement with Jangseong County, Gangjin County, and private sector participants to establish an AI data center.

The agreement includes Jeollanam-do, Jangseong County, Gangjin County, as well as Benefos, Daewoo Engineering & Construction, KT, Top Solar, KG Engineering, IPA, Eugene Investment & Securities, and Seed Investment Asset Management. These parties have agreed to cooperate in building the AI data center and creating a related industrial ecosystem.

A 200MW AI data center, with an investment of 2.2 trillion won, will be established in Jangseong County, while a 300MW AI data center, with an investment of 3.3 trillion won, will be built in Gangjin County.

The AI data center project is particularly significant because, in this sector, speed of construction is directly linked to competitiveness. The projects covered by this agreement are being promoted with much of the essential groundwork, such as securing sites, already in place. Based on this, Jeollanam-do plans to push forward rapidly, aiming for swift completion and operation.

Furthermore, this agreement is expected to serve as a model for AI data centers that make a real contribution to regional development. It not only covers the construction of the data centers but also includes discovering AI application models linked to local industries and actively cooperating in local recruitment and education.

Especially as administrative integration with Gwangju approaches in July, the combination of Gwangju's excellent pool of AI talent is expected to enable the creation of an AI ecosystem where talent, industry, and energy converge.

Going forward, Jeollanam-do plans to gradually implement an AI data center model tailored to the region's industrial conditions and characteristics, in line with the government's ongoing expansion of AI computing infrastructure and the direction toward distributed data centers.

Governor Kim Youngrok of Jeollanam-do stated, "With the administrative integration of Gwangju and Jeollanam-do set for July, this investment decision will be welcomed by all residents of both regions. This project is a leading example of fostering hub-type AI infrastructure that aligns well with government policy, and we will actively support its smooth implementation together with Jangseong and Gangjin Counties."

On January 8, Jeollanam-do also signed a business agreement with KEPCO KDN, Haenam County, and Southwest Coast Enterprise City Development Co., Ltd. to establish an energy-specialized AI data center and foster new AI and energy industries.
