Increase in Marine Pollution Incidents in Central Coast Guard Jurisdiction... Enhanced Anti-Discharge Measures Minimize Damage

Both the number of marine pollution incidents and the volume of pollutants discharged in the waters under the jurisdiction of the Central Coast Guard Headquarters increased last year compared to the previous year.

According to the Central Coast Guard Headquarters on January 15, there were a total of 60 marine pollution incidents in the Incheon, Pyeongtaek, Taean, and Boryeong sea areas last year, up by 10 cases from the previous year. By region, Incheon had the highest number with 19 cases, followed by Pyeongtaek with 16, Boryeong with 15, and Taean with 10.

It was found that 75% (45 cases) of marine pollution incidents were caused by negligence in vessel operation and management, as well as maritime accidents. In addition, the volume of pollutants released reached 21,800 liters, an increase of 6,300 liters (40.6%) compared to the previous year.

However, the Central Coast Guard Headquarters explained that it actively carried out oil transfer operations, moving oil from accident vessels to other ships or safe locations, effectively curbing substantial damage to the marine environment.

The number of transfer operations last year was five, two fewer than the previous year, but the volume transferred reached 12,800 liters, an increase of 8,300 liters. This was attributed to the strengthened response to large-scale and high-risk incidents, rather than small-scale transfers.

In July of last year, during a mass fishing vessel fire at Sinjin Port in Taean, the Central Coast Guard Headquarters quickly transferred approximately 78 kiloliters of oil, minimizing additional pollution within the port.

An official from the Central Coast Guard Headquarters stated, "Even though both the number of incidents and the volume of pollutants released increased, we were able to reduce marine environmental damage by strengthening anti-discharge measures. We will continue to protect clean seas by enhancing our emergency response capabilities and carrying out thorough preventive activities."
