Incheon Third Bridge Named "Cheongna Sky Bridge" Symbolizes Harmony Between Seo-gu and Jung-gu

The official name of the third bridge connecting Yeongjongdo and the mainland in Incheon has been finalized as "Cheongna Sky Bridge."

According to the Incheon city government on January 15, the National Geographic Information Institute under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport held a National Geographic Names Committee meeting the previous day. The committee rejected Jung-gu's request for a reconsideration regarding the name of the Incheon Third Bridge and confirmed the name previously decided by the city of Incheon. As a result, the Third Bridge received its official name just nine days after opening.

The National Geographic Names Committee determined that "Cheongna Sky Bridge" is the most appropriate name, as it embodies the meaning of coexistence and harmony between regions. The name combines "Cheongna" from Seo-gu and "Sky" from Jung-gu, reflecting the identities and symbolism of both areas.

Previously, in November of last year, the Incheon city government decided to name the Incheon Third Bridge, which connects Yeongjongdo (Jung-gu) and Cheongna (Seo-gu), as "Cheongna Sky Bridge" at a geographic names committee meeting. However, Jung-gu requested a reconsideration by the National Geographic Names Committee, asking for the name to be changed to "Incheon International Airport Bridge" to better represent Incheon's symbolism and identity. At that time, Seo-gu indicated its acceptance of the original name.

Jung-gu expressed regret over the committee's decision but ultimately accepted it.

Kim Jeongheon, Mayor of Jung-gu, stated, "Cheongna Sky Bridge does not take into account the identity and geographical characteristics of Yeongjong International City at all," adding, "This name, which only reflects one region, could unnecessarily provoke regional conflict." However, he also said, "Considering that the decision of the National Geographic Names Committee cannot be legally overturned, we will humbly accept this outcome."

The Third Bridge, the third structure connecting Yeongjongdo and the mainland, is 4.68 kilometers long and 30 meters wide, with six lanes in total. It opened on January 5. While the toll had been free until now, starting January 15, a toll of 2,000 won for small vehicles will be charged.
