Kim Jounghan, Former Deputy Mayor of Daegu, Donates 11 Fruit-Themed Photographs to Daegu Library

Daegu Library announced on January 14, 2026, that Kim Jounghan, former Deputy Mayor of Daegu and current President of the Korea Institute of Optics and Photonics as well as a photographer, has donated 11 photographic works to the library.

Kim Jounghan has held two solo photography exhibitions, in 2017 and 2024. The works donated this time are part of his second solo exhibition, themed "Taste and Light." These pieces uniquely express the flavors of fruit pulp, commonly found in daily life, through the medium of light.

Kim explained that for plants to propagate across generations, seeds must be widely dispersed, and to attract the animals that facilitate this, fruit pulp turns red or yellow when ripe. In other words, the color of the pulp visually represents its flavor. He used a technique that transmits light through the pulp, capturing in photographs the flavor and texture of fruit pulp that are difficult to observe with the naked eye in everyday life.

The donated works will be displayed throughout Daegu Library, including in the archives, providing citizens with opportunities to enjoy cultural experiences. Additionally, the donation is expected to significantly contribute to establishing Daegu Library as a complex cultural space where culture, art, and relaxation coexist.

Kim Jounghan began his public service career at Daegu City Hall after passing the civil service exam in 1992, serving as Deputy Mayor of Suseong District, Director of Safety Management Policy at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and Deputy Mayor of Daegu. He is currently serving as President of the Korea Institute of Optics and Photonics.

Kim Jounghan stated, "I am deeply honored to donate my works to Daegu Library, which has been reborn as a new complex cultural space in Daegu. A library should not simply be a place to read books, but a complex cultural space where books, culture, and art come together. I hope this donation, even in a small way, helps Daegu Library become a rich cultural space for citizens. I look forward to many citizens enjoying the cultural delights of Daegu Library, where books and artworks coexist."
