Kim Dong-yeon Orders Strengthened Cold Wave Measures for Vulnerable Groups Amid Severe Cold

Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon has issued special instructions to strengthen protection measures for vulnerable groups in the province amid the ongoing severe cold wave.

On the evening of January 13, Gyeonggi Provincial Government delivered these special instructions from the governor to 31 cities and counties as well as relevant agencies.

Although the cold wave advisory, which was issued for 27 cities and counties in the province on January 10, has now been lifted, the cold temperatures continue to be felt.

The special instructions include strengthening protection activities for groups vulnerable to the cold, activating emergency work systems when a cold wave advisory is in effect, and ensuring swift response with a focus on on-site actions in each city and county.

Accordingly, Gyeonggi Province will step up welfare checks and protection activities for vulnerable groups such as the elderly living alone and the homeless, and will conduct special inspections of cold-prone residences such as vinyl greenhouses to prevent damage.

In addition, the province emphasized the need to actively utilize accommodation-type emergency shelters during cold wave advisories to ensure that vulnerable groups can evacuate safely.

Furthermore, the province will strengthen guidance so that residents can actually use extended-hour shelters at night and those operating on weekends and holidays, by utilizing public-private cooperation networks such as volunteer disaster prevention teams and local community leaders to check whether cold wave shelters are open and heating systems are functioning properly.

Governor Kim also instructed thorough public awareness campaigns to prevent water supply facility freeze-ups, prompt on-site action to minimize inconvenience to residents in case of damage, and advance guidance and publicity to prevent crop cold damage and livestock losses.

Gyeonggi Province plans to continue actively providing cold wave safety guidelines this winter through all available channels, including disaster text alerts (CBS), electronic billboards, and village broadcasts.
