Last year, the number of hazardous materials accidents in Gyeonggi Province dropped by 44% compared to the previous year.
The Gyeonggi Provincial Fire and Disaster Headquarters announced on January 14 that, according to its analysis of hazardous materials accidents in the province last year, there were a total of 14 incidents, including 8 fires, 3 explosions, and 3 leaks. This represents a 44% decrease compared to the previous year. Even when compared to the five-year average number of annual accidents (25.6 cases), this figure is about half.
In terms of damage, property losses decreased by 77%, from 10.4 billion won in 2024 to 2.3 billion won in 2025. However, the number of casualties remained similar to the previous year, at 17 people.
Last year, the Provincial Fire and Disaster Headquarters proactively identified and improved on-site vulnerabilities by conducting fire safety inspections at 75 sites including lithium battery manufacturing plants, fire safety inspections at 51 data centers, and fire safety inspections at 4,168 hazardous materials facilities.
Choi Yongcheol, Acting Head of the Gyeonggi Provincial Fire and Disaster Headquarters, stated, "The decrease in the number of hazardous materials accidents demonstrates that changing management methods can significantly reduce damage. Gyeonggi Fire and Disaster Headquarters will use these results not as a one-time achievement, but as a standard for future management."
