The Gyeongbuk Culture and Tourism Organization (President Kim Namil) announced on January 14 that a total of 13,172 postcards were sent through the 'Slow Mailbox' operated at the Gyeongju Bomun Tourist Complex in 2025, including 12,752 domestic and 420 international postcards.
In the first half of the year, 6,814 postcards were sent (6,596 domestic and 218 international), and in the second half, 6,358 postcards were sent (6,156 domestic and 202 international).
The Slow Mailbox has been in operation near the Bomun Lake dock since 2015, marking its 12th year in 2025. Every year, around 10,000 postcards are sent both domestically and internationally.
The Slow Mailbox allows tourists visiting the Bomun Tourist Complex to write postcards during their trip, which are then stored for a certain period before being sent. Postcards are dispatched twice a year, at the end of June and the end of December, and the sender can choose the mailing period.
The postcards contain a variety of stories, from greetings to family, friends, and loved ones, to messages of determination and encouragement sent to oneself. Recipients of these postcards enjoy a special experience as they are reminded of their travel memories.
Slow Mailbox postcards are sent all over the world, including Asia, North America, South America, Europe, and Oceania. In 2025, Taiwan was the most common destination, followed by France, the United States, and Canada.
The postcards sent at the end of last year featured major attractions representing the Bomun Tourist Complex, such as the Gyeongju Expo Grand Park Solgeo Art Museum, Gyeongju HICO, Hwangnyongwon Jungdo Tower, Korea Tourism History Park, and Gyeongju World, receiving a positive response.
The Slow Mailbox at Gyeongju Bomun Complex is recognized as a signature emotional tourism content of Gyeongju, going beyond convenient services to emotionally connect tourists and the local community.
President Kim Namil said, "Each Slow Mailbox postcard is a travel record delivered across time," adding, "I hope that the messages written last year will bring warm comfort and joy to someone's daily life in the new year."
The organization plans to continue discovering emotional content that will remain in tourists' memories for a long time, thereby enhancing the value of local tourism.
