Kim Dongyeon, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, stated that the special prosecutor's call for the death penalty for former President Yoon Sukyeol was a natural outcome.
On the night of the 13th, Governor Kim wrote on his social networking service (SNS), "At last, the death penalty has been sought for Yoon Sukyeol, the ringleader of the rebellion," adding, "It is only natural that the maximum legal penalty is being sought for the worst destroyer of democracy in the history of the Republic of Korea."
He continued, "What remains is a swift and resolute verdict from the court," and added, "Justice must be served."
Earlier, Cho Eunseok, head of the special prosecutor's team for rebellion, requested this sentence during the final hearing held at the Seoul Central District Court Criminal Division 25 (Presiding Judge Ji Guyoun) on the same day.
Special Prosecutor Park Eoksu stated, "The state of martial law fundamentally violated the duty to uphold the Constitution and promote the freedom of the people, and essentially infringed upon national security and the survival of the people. In terms of its purpose, means, and execution, it constitutes anti-state activity," adding, "It has become clear who the so-called anti-state forces cited by former President Yoon as justification for the declaration of martial law actually were."
