Prime Minister Takaichi: "Cooperation with President Lee for Regional Stability" Yonhap News Agency

On January 13, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated, "Together with President Lee Jaemyung, we will move Japan-Korea relations forward, and both countries will cooperate and fulfill their roles for regional stability."

Prime Minister Takaichi made these remarks during her opening statement at the Japan-Korea summit held in Nara City, Nara Prefecture, Japan, on the afternoon of the same day. She added, "With President Lee's visit as a starting point, we will make this year one in which Japan-Korea relations develop to an even higher level."

Prime Minister Takaichi said, "Just a moment ago, during the small-group meeting, I discussed with the President our shared recognition of the strategic importance of Japan-Korea relations. President Lee spoke about the next 60 years, and I am pleased that both sides demonstrated the strength of Japan-Korea relations last year, which marked the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic ties."

She continued, "I hope that, with President Lee's visit this year, we can make this a year in which Japan-Korea relations advance to an even higher stage."

On this day, President Lee visited Nara Prefecture for a two-day, one-night schedule. Japanese media paid close attention, noting that it had been 14 years since a Korean president visited a regional city in Japan for diplomatic purposes. Nara Prefecture is also Prime Minister Takaichi's hometown and political base.

Nara, once the ancient capital of Japan, still bears traces of the influence of Baekje immigrants who introduced Buddhist culture and architectural techniques. Horyuji Temple, a historic temple that President Lee and Prime Minister Takaichi are scheduled to visit together on January 14, is especially famous for its "Baekje Kannon Statue."
