On January 12, the city of Yangju in Gyeonggi Province newly designated or expanded five shopping districts within its jurisdiction to strengthen the competitiveness of local commercial areas and broaden support for small business owners.
As a result of this designation, two locations-Okjeong Lake Park Shopping District and Deokhyeon Shopping District-were newly designated, while three others-Deokjeong Alley-Type Shopping District, Eomsang Village Shopping District, and Garaebi Jungang-ro Shopping District-were expanded from their existing areas. Following the new or expanded designation of nine shopping districts in 2025, the city plans to continue expanding support for neighborhood commercial areas in 2026 as well.
With this designation, small business owners within the designated districts are now eligible to participate in various support programs promoted by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups or Gyeonggi Province. They will also be able to register as affiliates for Onnuri Gift Certificates and benefit from various consumption-boosting events and other practical advantages.
An official from Yangju City stated, "The designation of shopping districts is a meaningful achievement that brings small business owners within neighborhood commercial areas into the institutional framework and expands the policy effectiveness of support programs for small businesses. We will continue our efforts to enhance the self-sufficiency and competitiveness of neighborhood commercial areas by further expanding shopping districts in the future."
