Argument After Drinking With Acquaintance at Bar
Stabbed Multiple Times With Broken Beer Bottle on Attempted Murder Charge
Suwon District Court Sentences Defendant to Three Years in Prison
A man in his 60s has been sentenced to prison for attempted murder after stabbing a victim in the face with a broken beer bottle during an altercation at a bar, leaving the victim unconscious.
According to the legal community on January 11, the 15th Criminal Division of the Suwon District Court, presided over by Chief Judge Jung Yunseop, sentenced Mr. A to three years in prison on charges of attempted murder.
In the early morning hours of August last year, Mr. A was drinking alone at a bar in Gwonseon-gu, Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, when he joined a table with Mr. B, an acquaintance in his 50s, and his group. An argument broke out. During a physical altercation, Mr. B kicked Mr. A, causing him to fall. Mr. A then struck Mr. B on the head with a beer bottle and stabbed Mr. B twice in the face with the broken bottle, allegedly attempting to kill him.
As a result of Mr. A's actions, Mr. B suffered multiple injuries to the facial artery and traumatic shock, and was transported to the hospital unconscious. He underwent emergency surgery and received intensive care, including life support, in the intensive care unit.
During the trial, Mr. A claimed that he did not intend to kill, but the court did not accept this argument.
The court stated, "A broken beer bottle, depending on how it is used, can become a lethal weapon. Considering the depth and width of the wounds confirmed by evidence, it appears that the defendant stabbed the victim's face with full force using the broken bottle. If the victim's companions had not intervened, it is highly likely that the defendant would have continued to attack the victim, who was effectively unable to defend himself."
The court added, "The defendant continues to deny the crime, raising doubts about whether he is truly remorseful. Although the crime was not completed, the severity of the offense and the extent of the victim's injuries make the defendant highly blameworthy, and a severe punishment is unavoidable."
However, the court explained the sentencing background, noting in the defendant's favor that he reached a settlement with the victim, committed the crime impulsively, and did not flee the scene but was arrested as a flagrant offender.
