Four UNIST Professors Named to Korea’s Most Prestigious Engineering Academy

Myungsoo Shin, Jinyoung Kim, Youngchun Kim, and Jaeyoung Shim Selected as New Members This Year
Demonstrating Competitiveness Across Construction, Energy, Technology Management, and AI Engineering

Four professors from UNIST (President Chong Rae Park) have been named as new regular members of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea, the most prestigious institution in Korea’s engineering and technology sector.

With four professors selected as new regular members for 2026, UNIST has demonstrated its research competitiveness across the entire field of engineering, including construction and environmental engineering, chemical and biological engineering, technology management policy, and computing.

The National Academy of Engineering of Korea selects members from engineering and technology experts affiliated with corporations, universities, and research institutes who have contributed to national development through research achievements and technological innovation. Following nominations, candidates undergo a multi-stage review process lasting about 10 months, during which their research accomplishments and the academic and industrial impact of their technologies are comprehensively evaluated.

The newly appointed regular members from UNIST are: Myungsoo Shin, Professor of the Department of Earth Environmental Urban Construction Engineering (Construction and Environmental Engineering Division); Jinyoung Kim, Professor of the Department of Energy Chemical Engineering (Chemical and Biological Engineering Division); Youngchun Kim, Professor of the Graduate School of Technology Management (Technology Management Policy Division); and Jaeyoung Shim, Professor of the Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence (Computing Division).

Professor Myungsoo Shin is a researcher in sustainable construction technology and seismic engineering, who has advanced AI-based seismic design and performance evaluation technologies. He has led the development of low-carbon, high-performance construction materials and is recently expanding his research into smart construction utilizing 3D printing.

Professor Jinyoung Kim is an expert in next-generation solar cells and optoelectronic devices, recognized for raising the efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells, thereby enhancing their commercialization potential. Through international collaborative research, he has also contributed to the spread of renewable energy and the realization of carbon neutrality.

Professor Youngchun Kim specializes in organizational theory and technological innovation strategy, empirically analyzing innovation strategies of established and startup companies, as well as the relationship between organizational learning and corporate innovation performance. His research has been published in international academic journals such as 'Organization Science' and 'Research Policy.'

Professor Jaeyoung Shim is a researcher in visual intelligence (computer vision) and serves as Dean of the UNIST Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence. He has developed image and large-scale 3D data reconstruction technologies and is conducting research in industrial fields such as autonomous vehicles, robotics, drones, and digital twins. He is also dedicated to fostering talent with the ability to solve industrial problems using artificial intelligence.

President Chong Rae Park stated, "We will strengthen our support to ensure that world-class research achievements continue to emerge from UNIST," adding, "We will also ensure that outstanding research results are properly recognized by major academic and professional organizations both domestically and internationally."
