Gyeonggi Province Completes 4.3km Section of Local Route 86 Between Wabu and Hwado
Finished After 5 Years and 8 Months... Eases Traffic Congestion in Hwado-eup, Namyangju
A Positive Signal for Logistics and Tourism Vitalization in Northeastern Gyeonggi
The 4.3-kilometer section of Local Route 86 between Wabu and Hwado will officially open on January 13, after five years and eight months of construction.
The travel time between Wabu and Hwado will be reduced by nine minutes, improving the quality of life for local residents. Additionally, as it connects to the Seoul-Yangyang Expressway, it is expected to boost logistics and tourism in the northeastern region of Gyeonggi Province.
Gyeonggi Province announced on January 11 that the 'Local Route 86 Wabu-Hwado Road Construction Project,' which began in May 2020, has recently been completed. The new road will open on January 13 to alleviate severe traffic congestion and prevent accidents in the Hwado-eup area of Namyangju City.
The newly opened section is a two-lane, 4.3-kilometer stretch connecting Changhyeon-ri to Geumnam-ri in Hwado-eup along Local Route 86, with a total project cost of 92.7 billion KRW. The existing road, which was narrow and winding and posed a high risk of accidents, has been upgraded to a straight, two-lane road, addressing a long-standing demand of local residents.
With this opening, travel time has been reduced from 13 minutes to 4 minutes, and road safety has been significantly improved, which is expected to help prevent accidents. The improved traffic safety is also anticipated to ease congestion in the frequently jammed sections within Hwado-eup. In particular, better access to the Hwado Interchange on the Seoul-Yangyang Expressway will make travel to Seoul and nearby cities and counties much easier.
Direct connection to National Route 45 will also enhance logistics efficiency for tourist destinations along the Bukhan River and local industrial facilities, which is expected to further revitalize the local economy and tourism industry.
Starting with this opening, the province plans to further strengthen the road network in the northeastern region of Gyeonggi and maximize connectivity with the first and second metropolitan ring expressways.
A Gyeonggi Province official stated, "The opening of the Wabu-Hwado section of Local Route 86 will not only resolve traffic congestion in the Namyangju area but also serve as an important turning point for revitalizing the local economy. We will do our best to expand infrastructure to alleviate transportation inconveniences for residents and create a safer road environment."
