Russia Launches Airstrikes on Key Cities Including Kyiv and Lviv
The United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on January 12 (local time) to discuss the large-scale Russian airstrikes on Ukraine.
According to AFP and other sources, the emergency meeting will be convened at 3 p.m. on January 12 at Ukraine's request to address the airstrike situation. France, the United Kingdom, Latvia, Denmark, Greece, and Liberia have expressed their support for holding the emergency meeting.
Andriy Melnyk, Ukraine's Ambassador to the United Nations, criticized Russia in a letter to the Security Council, stating, "Russia has committed acts of terror targeting civilians, escalating to a horrific new stage of war crimes and crimes against humanity."
Ambassador Melnyk further stated, "Russia claims to have used the so-called Oreshynyk missile in the Lviv region," adding, "Such attacks pose a serious and unprecedented threat to the security of the European continent."
The previous night, Russia launched large-scale airstrikes using hypersonic ballistic missiles and other weapons, targeting key locations such as Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, and the western central city of Lviv.
The Oreshynyk missile, which was used in this airstrike and travels at Mach 10, is reportedly impossible to intercept with Ukraine's current air defense system. The Oreshynyk missile is said to have struck critical infrastructure in Lviv.
Ukrainian authorities reported that the Russian airstrikes killed four people, including emergency responders, in Kyiv, injured at least 25 others, and damaged more than 20 residential buildings.
Additionally, power outages occurred in various areas, forcing Ukrainian residents to endure subzero temperatures below minus 10 degrees Celsius without heating, leaving them in fear.
Vitaliy Klitschko, Mayor of Kyiv, announced that heating was cut off in about 6,000 residential buildings-half of all such buildings in Kyiv-due to the Russian airstrikes, and issued an evacuation order.
