Goseong County plans to focus its administrative capacity on securing the designation of the Peace Economic Special Zone, with the aim of expanding inter-Korean economic cooperation and transforming the border area into a space of peaceful coexistence and a platform for mutually beneficial growth.
The county has already proactively completed a research project on the creation of the Peace Economic Special Zone and is currently conducting a study to establish a designation strategy for the zone. Going forward, Goseong County will hold meetings related to the designation strategy study on a quarterly basis and plans to organize various events to build consensus and create a favorable atmosphere for the designation of the special zone.
The Peace Economic Special Zone is a system that was legally established with the enactment and enforcement of the "Act on the Designation and Operation of Peace Economic Special Zones" in 2023. It is a special zone that can actively attract corporate investment through various incentives, such as tax benefits and support for infrastructure.
Following the Ministry of Unification’s announcement on December 26, 2025, of the "First Basic Plan for Peace Economic Special Zones," which includes the designation of approximately four Peace Economic Special Zones, Goseong County intends to steadily proceed with the study to establish its designation strategy.
An official from Goseong County stated, "The Peace Economic Special Zone is not merely a regional development project, but a national task to overcome the limitations of the border area and open a new economic order in which the two Koreas grow together. Goseong County, with its geographical symbolism and accumulated preparations, is the most suitable region for the first designation of the Peace Economic Special Zone."
The official added, "With the launch of the Administrative Support Task Force (TF), we will concentrate all administrative resources to ensure the designation of the Peace Economic Special Zone through systematic strategy development and close cooperation with the central government. We will do our utmost to establish Goseong County as a practical peace economy model that leads both peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula."
