Ministry of Food and Drug Safety Recalls Soy Sauce Containing Excessive Levels of 'Possibly Carcinogenic 3-MCPD'

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced on January 9, 2026, that "Jangsu Gukganjang," manufactured and sold by Jangsu General Food Industry, a food manufacturing and processing company, was found to contain excessive levels of 3-MCPD.

3-MCPD is classified as a Group 2B substance, meaning "possibly carcinogenic to humans," by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which operates under the World Health Organization (WHO).


The recall applies to products labeled with a consumption deadline of December 17, 2027.


The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety stated that Haman County Office in Gyeongsangnam-do has initiated a recall of the product, and advised consumers who have purchased the product to stop consuming it and return it to the place of purchase.
