Starting this year, Seo-gu District in Gwangju Metropolitan City will provide liability insurance support for people with disabilities and seniors aged 65 or older who use electric mobility aids such as electric wheelchairs and electric scooters.

This initiative is being implemented under the "Ordinance on Insurance Enrollment and Support for Disabled and Elderly Users of Electric Mobility Aids in Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City." The goal is to reduce the financial burden on users by covering personal injury and property damage accidents that may occur while using electric mobility aids.

Through a group contract between the Seo-gu Office and an insurance company, all residents registered in Seo-gu are automatically enrolled in the insurance without any separate application process.

However, if a resident moves out of Seo-gu to another area, the insurance is automatically canceled.

The coverage provides compensation of up to 20 million won per accident for third-party personal injury or property damage caused while operating an electric mobility aid, with a deductible of 50,000 won.

Compensation is available nationwide, regardless of where the accident occurs, and insurance claims can be filed within three years from the date of the accident.

To file a claim, users can apply through WheelchairKorea.com, after which the district office will verify the applicant's residency status before proceeding with the compensation process.

Seo-gu District Mayor Lee Ikang stated, "We hope that this insurance support will serve as an institutional safety net to alleviate both the anxiety over accidents and the financial burden for users of electric mobility aids."
